Little Brown Dog is an example. We hadn't been here a week when the little guy pranced into our yard to welcome us. His name is actually Apollo (which is awesome because one of our dogs is Thor), and he is all about making friends and lending a helping paw (or nose) when we're working on projects on this 27-acre ranch.
He's very indicative of all the neighbors. When we have a hard rain, one man has a commercial road grader and comes out and clears and smooths all the dirt roads making them quite passable. The other day, the local furniture store owner was out to deliver a purchase. When we told him that we needed a recommendation for two guys with a big truck to help clear away some debris, he offered to get a truck and help us get it done.
Two total strangers that we met at the Dairy Queen welcomed us to the community and offered a lot of advice about how to take advantage of our livestock exemption. They've even called twice to see if we need help with anything.
One day while at the Chamber of Commerce, Mark (my husband) bumped into a salesperson at the Cameron Herald next door. During the conversation, he told her we were thinking about building a barndominium, and lo and behold she and her husband had just built one. The next thing you know, she invited us over to see it!
I could go on and on, but my point is that the spirit of brotherly love is alive and well in Cameron, Texas. I find it interesting that it seems easier to get to know the neighbors, who are spread quite far apart in Cameron, than it was to get acquainted with those living 25 feet from us in Los Angeles!
So, look around and see how many little brown dogs you can find in your area and reach out to them with a warm, friendly helping hand. You'll be so glad that you did.
Til Next Time, Be Kind,
Carol
