Riding Through It

There's an expression that horse trainers use whenever a client's ride becomes difficult - "Keep riding through it." I've heard it at least a hundred times while riding my horse. It's a function of good horsemanship. If you give up or get off in the midst of difficulties, you might win the battle that day but lose the war in the long run. Learning to be really good at something takes persistence and time. Such it is with life; so it is with writing.

The Wendys of the World

My friend, Wendy Morgan (on the right above), is the human embodiment of unconditional love. I often talk about how dogs, more than any other creatures, express it. But, I have to say that I’ve found it in human form as well. I’ve often thought that Wendy is an Earth Angel. That may be so. Let me tell you about her.

I met Wendy through my sport, dressage. We board and train our horses with the same wonderful expert. Wendy is always the first to offer help when someone needs it. When we’re at a horse show, and someone needs lunch, she is the first to offer to go out of her way to get it. She brings donuts to everyone and coffee to her trainer every Saturday morning. She is the first to open her wallet and give you everything that she has, if you need it. I know that several times she has helped friends in financial need with her savings, and she never talks about any of it. It is just who she is.

Does that mean that in order to give unconditional love that you have to give everyone your money and wait on them when they need it? No, I only use the way she gives to others as an example of her loving nature.

If you are having a down day, she will just sit quietly with you and let her sheer presence comfort you. If you need her to go somewhere with you, she will. If you need a favor, she’s there. I’ve been on the receiving end of a lot of it, and I can tell you, she’s amazing.

What makes her amazing is her demeanor. She never asks for anything in return. It is almost as if the act itself is her reward. I’ve never known anyone quite like her. The most unselfish of the unselfish. Cheerleader, friend, confidante, giver of comfort and kindest of the kind.

We need to treasure and honor the Wendys of the world. Too few of them are to be found. How lucky I am to be able to call her my friend. Will I ever be able to return the many generous kindnesses she has shown me? I sincerely hope so.

So, Wendy Morgan, I salute and honor you for the wonderful example you are on how to be a true friend, and how to give others unconditional love.

Til Next Time,

Carol

Wow -this is the kindest thing I have ever heard. Unfortunately it is backwards. Carol is the one who has been there for me in need. She has always been there to listen and give sage advice. We should be greatful for the Carols of the world!

Wendy, of course you would turn it around and say other people are the ONES. But you are the ONE! Thank you for always being you. Kim, thanks so much. I am lucky to have you in my life. I feel so fortunate to have such wonderful friends!
