Riding Through It

There's an expression that horse trainers use whenever a client's ride becomes difficult - "Keep riding through it." I've heard it at least a hundred times while riding my horse. It's a function of good horsemanship. If you give up or get off in the midst of difficulties, you might win the battle that day but lose the war in the long run. Learning to be really good at something takes persistence and time. Such it is with life; so it is with writing.

How Do You Mend a Broken Heart?

Aramis and me at the LA Equestrian Center.
For those of you who know me, you know how important my horse Aramis is to me. He passed away unexpectedly this past Sunday morning on July 3rd. From now on, the 4th of July will always symbolize his loss.

Only 32 minutes passed from the time he showed any signs of distress until he was gone. Three large stones in his colon caused the organ to rupture. Friesians are so stoic that by the time they show distress it is almost too late to save them. In this case, nothing would have helped him. He showed no prior signs of discomfort, and there was no way to know the stones were growing in his colon.

He was a champion in the show ring and in life. He taught me how to be strong, how to be patient, how to love unconditionally and how to live in the moment. He was loved by all who ever knew him. I am forever grateful for the eight years that he has belonged to me.

When I began writing Snow Blood 4, I modeled a new character, Mathias, a winged Friesian angel, after him. I had no idea that he would  truly be the winged Friesian angel who will live in my broken heart forever.

Til Another Time,
Carol

My heart aches for you Carol. Aramis sounds like he was a beloved family member and I thank you for sharing stories and pictures of him in your blog. I'm looking forward to reading about Mathias, your winged Friesian angel in Snowblood 4. I'm sure he'll have a lot to teach me about unconditional love. Blessings and peace

My heartfelt sympathy for your loss. I understand how devastating this is, I lost my beloved furbaby unexpectedly (he was fine we I left for work, I found him curled up passed away when I got home). It's been 22 years, and I still ache for him. Know that your fan-friends are here for you. Bless you.
